SPRINGFIELD,MO -- An arsonist is speculated to have started a fire that killed 15 horses at the Lincoln Downs Race Track early this morning, the day before the opening of racing season.  The fire was started at 4 a.m. this morning, killing thirteen thoroughbreds and two saddle horses. Ten of the horses escaped, two with their backs ablaze.
“Flames were shooting out of the building when we got here.”The fire ripped at the barn structure, wreaking havoc until only several rows of charred wooden supports remained.
The building was wrought with flames from 4 a.m. and the embers smoldered till 12 p.m. the next day. The fire started at the center of the barn, Fire Chief Bernard Perry said. The electrical outlets and heaters were at the end of the barn, according to assistant track manager Dan Bucci. Fire officials are considering arson in their investigation.
Many agree, that the most horrific consequence is the death of the horses dear to the jockey’s heart. Jockey Albert Ramos watched the firemen attempt to quell the fire, “Those are my best friends,” he said, pointing to the surviving horses. “I love those horses more than I do people. I feel like I want to cry.”
As the sun rose on the Lincoln Downs Race Track this morning, what was supposed to be a day riddled with excitement left many with heavy hearts. We can only hope the arson investigation will provide closure for the track, the jockeys, and everyone affected.
